DORCHESTER, MA — Dorchester community leader and mother Latoya Gayle officially launched her campaign for Massachusetts State Senate in the 1st Suffolk District on Saturday, March 7, with a community-centered kickoff event at Dayspace in Dorchester. The launch marks one of the first serious challenges for the seat in years. Dayspace, a coworking space designed for parents with professional workspaces and an on-site playroom for children, reflected the campaign’s focus on working families.
Over 100 supporters and community members gathered for the launch, including families, small business owners, and neighborhood leaders from across the district.
Gayle’s campaign will focus on addressing the real pressures facing 1st Suffolk families—from housing and energy costs to the education and childcare systems that shape everyday life and determine whether working families can stay and succeed in the communities they call home.
“I’m running for State Senate because families in our communities deserve someone who will fight for them—unapologetically,” Gayle said.
During the event, Gayle outlined her campaign priorities, including strengthening housing stability, lowering energy costs for working families, and ensuring that public education and childcare systems support both children and the parents who rely on them.
“When policies benefit the wealthiest residents while everyday people struggle to stay afloat, that’s a choice—and I believe we can make a different one,” Gayle added.
The kickoff event also featured remarks from neighbor Ann Walsh, who acknowledged Women’s History Month and Latoya’s history-making campaign, as she is poised to become only the fifth Black woman elected to the State Senate in its 245-year history.
“She has the grit to really fight for what we want,” said Ashleigh Collins, a South Boston resident who named housing affordability as a top priority. Supporters throughout the room echoed a common theme: a desire for leadership that prioritizes people over power.
Gayle, a longtime Dorchester resident and community advocate, said her campaign is rooted in conversations with families across the district who are navigating rising costs and uncertainty about the future.
The campaign will continue engaging residents across Dorchester, Chinatown, and surrounding neighborhoods in the coming weeks through community conversations and neighborhood events.
